Where is Comino?
Comino is the smallest of the Maltese islands. It is situated North of Malta, between Gozo and Malta.
How to get to Comino?
There is a ferry service from ?irkewwa in the north of Malta to Comino. It takes around 25 minutes, although some boats will stop along the way for you to marvel at the stunning coastline. Comino can also be reached from M?arr on Gozo. Either way be sure to get an early boat as Comino is very popular among locals as well as tourists so can get busy in high season.
Alternatively, you can do a whole day boat trip where you can hop on and off and explore all day from the water. This can be a group tour or a private charter for those with a little extra spending money!
How to get to the Blue Lagoon on Comino?
You can’t miss the Blue Lagoon! From the boat over to Comino you will already most likely see the crystal clear waters of the Blue Lagoon. Once you leave the boat, walk to the right and follow the path. There is one small beach on the way with sun loungers. After this you will arrive at the Blue Lagoon.
What to do on Comino?
The Blue Lagoon is situated on a rocky part of the coastline of Comino. This is the main attraction here but there are also other beaches and things to do on Comino. Read on for some other things to do on this tiny but amazing island, including a cave and a shipwreck!
How to get around?
You can walk around the island, but it can get very hot and there is no shade along the way. The other alternative is to get a shuttle transfer across the island. There are some jeeps that will pick you up near the Blue Lagoon and take you to Santa Marija Bay. It only costs a few Euros and is well worth it to get around faster in the heat
The Blue Lagoon
Get here as early as you can and just enjoy! Swim, snorkel, float on a floatie and make the most of this clear water. As it is relatively shallow the whole way across, the water is also very pleasantly warm, so you can spend much longer here just calling in the water.
Chill at San Niklaw Bay
San Niklaw Bay is home to Comino Hotel. This is a lovely bay with clear waters, perfect to escape the crowds at the Blue Lagoon. There is also a dive shop here for those of you who are keen divers and want to explore more of the under water world here.
Swim at Santa Marija Bay
This is a perfect little bay. There is a small beach and a bar. You will see boats stop here and people jumping right in.
Explore the Santa Maria Caves
These are best seen from the water! Take a boat trip to explore the coast here and be sure to bring your snorkel. Alternatively, go diving and see these caves up close. Some of the caves are completely underwater so only accessible when diving. Others are over the water so you can enter with a boat.
Visit Il-Batterija ta' Santa Marija
Malta is famous for its forts and the fort at Comino is another one to add to the list. It dates back to 1715 and is perched right on the cliffs edge.
Walk up to Saint Mary’s Tower
The tower stands about 80 metres above sea level and has had many different uses over the years. It has been used as a hospital, a prisoner of war camp and now can be visited on certain days of the week. Right next to the tower, you will find the former isolation hospital that was used to treat patients with the plague and cholera.
Swim near the P31 Wreck
This is the wreck of a patrol boat and is a popular dive site. It is 52 metres long and stands upright in the water, making it a great wreck to explore. As with all of Comino, the water is perfect so it is a great spot with good visibility when diving.
Visit the Crystal Lagoon
The Crystal Lagoon is best seen by boat. It is a small bay with tall cliffs overlooking beautiful clear blue water below. Remember to bring your snorkel and be ready to dive right in!
Where to go next?
Be sure to spend a day on Gozo island, or at least stop off on your way if you are on a boat tour! Then once you get back to Malta, if you are in time for sunset then head to the Coral Lagoon in the North of Malta.
Remember to head to Comino as early as you can to beat the crowds! Take plenty of sunscreen, beach towels, refreshments, and a hat. One more thing to mention is that there have been jellyfish seen in the waters here from time to time, so be vigilant. Most of all, have fun and spend as much time as you can exploring Comino!
